If you are new to Title One, please check out the commonly asked questions below for even more information! What is Title 1? Title 1 is a federal grant program that provides financial assistance and/or supplemental educational services to local educational agencies and schools to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. Is Title 1 the same thing as “special education?” No. Special education is the practice of educating students with special needs in a way that addresses their individual differences and specific needs. This includes classroom or private instruction involving techniques, exercises, and subject matter designed for students whose learning needs are difficult to meet through a standard school curriculum. Title 1 is a program that provides supplemental educational services to help targeted students meet the Indiana State Standards. These targeted students do not necessarily include students with special needs. Why is my child in a Title 1 class? Your child has been selected to receive Title 1 services at Hoosier Academy based on the current data. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher for additional information. When are Title 1 classes held? At Hoosier Academy, Title 1 classes and/or sessions are held during normal school hours/days, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, M-F. These sessions are scheduled around your child’s core classes. How will my child’s progress be tracked? As the Learning Coach, you will regularly receive updates regarding your child’s progress from your child’s Title 1 teacher(s). Where are Title 1 classes held? At Hoosier Academy, Title 1 classes are offered through Blackboard Collaborate, as well as onsite for some grade levels. At what points in the year will my child have to attend Title 1 classes? Students are assigned to Title 1 classes throughout the year, on a rolling basis, based on placement criteria and individualized needs. How does a Title 1 classroom differ from a general education classroom? Title 1 classes are typically smaller than traditional size classes. Smaller class sizes present positive learning environments that produce more opportunities for Title 1 teachers to spend time focusing on the urgent individualized needs of students. Sometimes, in traditional class settings, the individualized needs of some students don’t get addressed due to just time restraints alone. Title 1 classes supplement general education classes, as opposed to “replacing” them. How is the Title 1 program funded and managed? Title 1 is funding through the federal government. At the school level, Title 1 is managed by the school’s leadership team, Title 1 Team, and/or Title 1 Coordinator. How are Title 1 classes effective in a virtual school? Smaller class sizes create more of an opportunity for highly effective teachers to individualize instruction and build better relationships with students. Will my child earn a grade in Title One classes? Participation and good effort are very important factors to consider when assessing students in Title 1 classes. Students can receive grades, however, the greatest priority when assessing students in Title One is tracking small growth during the learning process through formative assessments. How will my child benefit from participating in the Title 1 program? It has been proven that students enrolled in Title 1 classes show academic improvement as a result of participating. Please see your Title 1 teacher for further details. |
